Sore throat caused by hay fever?

Sore Throat Due To Hay Fever? Here Are 5 Natural Remedies to Soothe

An estimated 13 million people are affected by hay fever in the UK. As this is one of the most common allergic conditions, it can affect anyone at any age, and men and women are equally affected. Though hay fever does not pose a serious threat to health, it can be quite annoying to deal with as symptoms include having a sore throat. Having hay fever-induced sore throat on top of sneezing, itchy eyes, and a runny nose can be uncomfortable for anyone. Fortunately, there are natural ways to deal with a sore throat that can help you manage this hay fever symptom.

What causes hay fever

According to Dr. Paul Dowding, a senior lecturer in the Trinity College Dublin botany department, grass pollen is the cause of most hay fever allergies in Ireland and Britain as up to 90% of people with hay fever are allergic to it. It has also been said that city dwellers appear to suffer more because of the combination of pollen and diesel fumes.

Those who suffer from hay fever will experience a combination of a runny nose, coughing, watery eyes, postnasal drip, dark circles appearing beneath the eyes, and a dry and itchy throat. One way to cope with hay fever is to go to an area without any pollen or diesel fumes such as the beach. But if you’re unable to spend a few weeks by the sea, the best thing that you can do is to try to ease the symptoms of hay fever to make you feel more comfortable. You can start by taking care of your dry and painful throat, and here are 5 natural remedies to relieve a sore throat.

Gargling with warm salty water is one of the simplest things that anyone can do to relieve a sore throat. All you need to do is to dissolve half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and gargle the solution as often as you want. Children should not try this natural sore throat remedy as some kids may swallow the salty water instead of spitting it out.

Honey and lemon

This combination is a tried and tested sore throat remedy that has been around for a long time. Honey soothes the throat and suppresses a cough, while lemon breaks up the mucus to clear your throat. Mix hot water, the juice of half a lemon, and two teaspoons of honey to make a soothing and pleasant-tasting tea.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C can boost your immune system and fight infection. You can take 500mg of vitamin C three times a day, or increase your intake of foods rich in vitamin C such as tomatoes, oranges, or red peppers.

The antiseptic and antibacterial properties of raw garlic can cure a sore throat. However, if you don’t like the taste of raw garlic, you can try taking garlic in capsule form about four times a day and take them with a bit of food.

Apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar has high acidity levels that can kill bacteria and soothe a sore throat. Some choose to take it straight, but you can mix a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with a tablespoon of honey and a cup of warm water and drink it while it’s still warm. You can also mix two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with 1/3 cup of warm water and gargle the mixture twice a day.

If you’re suffering from hay fever and have a sore throat to boot, try any of these natural sore throat remedies today. You should also consult your GP if your sore throat worsens as you may require prescription medication.
